Menu Home Upfront Now Up Books Towns Structures People Firms Lexicon LE ROUX, Servaas Daniel Born: 1868 04 04 Died: 1944 10 08 Architect Born in Wellington in the Cape, the son of Christian S le Roux of Wellington, Le Roux was educated privately. Nothing is yet known of his training and in 1897 at the age of twenty-nine he left South Africa for Rhodesia (Zimbabwe). He was among the pioneer architects in what was then known as Mashonaland 'architect for most of the important buildings in Salisbury (Harare) and Umtali' (SAWW 1916). He lived in Salisbury (Harare) for some time although the General directory of United South Africa (1915) listed him working as an architect in Nairobi, Kenya. Mem Soc of Arts & Pretoria Club. (General dir USA 1915; Jackson 1986 a, b; SAWW 1910, 1916) He died in Johannesburg on a visit from Salisbury on 8th October 1944. There is an article in the Rand Daily Mail of 9th October listing much of this. It is entitled "Another Pioneer Passes S.D. le Roux". In his varied history he was an Early Pioneer of Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) having come to Umtali (Mutare) in 1898. The following year saw him in Kimberley and then back to Salisbury (Harare). He went big game hunting in East Africa in 1910. 1912 saw him open the first Gold Mine in Tanganyika (Deutsch-Ostafrika [German East Africa], now Tanzania) and he was there in 1914 when he was interned by the Germans for the whole of the 1914 – 18 war. Between then and 1922 he was on the Rand as his daughter was born in Pretoria in 1904. He returned to Salisbury in 1922 for good. He was for a time Vice President of the Rand Pioneer's Society and valuator for Umtali, Ndola (Northern Rhodesia (Zambia)), Livingstone and Highlands in Salisbury.
