Was born in Wynberg, Cape Colony, son of Henry James (1876-1969) and his wife Anne Elizabeth nee Waddell (1874-1925). He married Margaret Jean Martin Finnie (1909-1980) in Wynberg, Cape Province by whom he had at least one son, Miles John Linington (1950-1972) Family Search.
Linington studied architecture at the University of Cape Town as a full-time student from 1928 to 1934 and entered James MORRIS's office in Cape Town where he spent twenty-two months in practical training. In 1935/6 he was employed by the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT in Pretoria, as an Architectural Assistant Grade 2. He remained with the PWD for three years before returning to Cape Town in 1938 to join the CAPE TOWN CITY ENGINEERS. In 1939 he was elected an Associate member of the RIBA. In 1959 he was working for the City Engineer's Department, Cape Town and in 1969 he was in private practice in Claremont, Cape. Linington retired in 1970 and resigned from the Institute of South African Architects in 1978.
