Lloyd studied architecture at University College, London from 1921 to 1926, graduating with first class honours in architectural design and reinforced concrete construction. He had had two years experience in the atelier of Architecture (the Bartlett School) under Professor AE Richardson who signed his Associate membership papers for the RIBA. From 1926 to 1927 he was employed by the London County Council architectural department, leaving to work in the offices of North, Robin & Wilson and of Wallis, Gilbert & Partners in London between 1927 and 1928. In February 1929 Lloyd was appointed successor to AS FURNER at the School of Architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg at the suggestion of Furner. According to Herbert (1975:34-35), Lloyd's appointment at the School of Architecture was an unhappy one, scarcely lasting a year. He left Johannesburg in 1931 to return to England, where he worked in Birmingham. At some point his address was in Bedford Park, London. He resigned from the Institute of South African Architects only in 1938.
