| Award citation This prototypical approach to the design of a community sports centre at Piketberg responds to the challenge of recycling used sea freight containers for community use. It is designed in a manner that accepts the challenge of meeting programmatic as well as climatic concerns in a clear and direct manner. This creates a strong architectural image that would be adaptable to a variety of different contexts, which is always the challenge in the creation of prototypes. The tilted roof plane that folds over the rear of the building, screening the store rooms, is a simple and elegant solution to the issue of providing solar protection through the use of a ventilated double roof, as well as serving as a potential surface for movie screening or advertising. The elements that form the design are well handled with clarity of detailing. This project demonstrates the difference that architectural intervention can make in the provision of community facilities on a minimal funded budget. There is evidence of everyday use by the community for which it was designed. (PrArch - The Cape Institute for Architecture.
