| This station replaced the centrally located Natal Government Railways Station Complex. The decision to locate the main station in Greyville, away from the CBD, sparked debate. The original plan was to build the new station on the Esplanade, but the Durban Corporation favored the Greyville location, where it was built. Shelagh NATION observed that the design architect, Tielman SCHOLTZ's: ... ability for complex thinking is perhaps demonstrated best in the design of Durban Station. During the apartheid years, platforms and facilities had to be completely separated, and because trains arrived from both North and South, the plan of the station was complex and difficult. Tielman pointed out to his clients that apartheid could not last, but this proposition was not well received, so he designed a facility which could be adapted to more conventional use without making any structural alterations other than merely changing the signage.
