Award of Merit Citation FNB Stadium, known as Soccer City for the duration of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, is one of the most easily recognisable buildings within South Africa and has carved a place for itself in Soweto and Johannesburg's skyline. This inspirational building demonstrates a new type of architectural morphology, which is of and from its context. Soccer City demonstrates a unique design concept - that of the African calabash, a symbolic artefact within a South African - and African - context, rooting Soccer City as a building and place firmly within the African landscape. The building's floor plan demonstrates how the various indoor spaces for VIP dignitaries, spectators, players and administration staff are well articulated and located to ensure efficient, safe and secure pedestrian flows. Vehicular movement is strategically minimal and removed from pedestrians. The interior quality of the non-spectator areas is casually corporate and complements the casual finishes in the spectator areas. The multi-faceted facade, permeated with both natural and artificial lighting at night, gives the building a distinctive aesthetic that creates visual interest and dynamism, making this a building that generates excitement from its users and viewers.
