In 1868 it was owned by one Mr MC Bantjies and named 'The Roadside Inn'. It had a bar, general dealer, butcher and post office. A short-lived gold-rush of 1891 ensured its popularity. In the South African (Anlo-Boer) War it was visited by British troops but was also raided by Boer commandos under Gideon Scheepers for proviant. It is now dilapidated. (Kramer 2021:74)
