Click to view map Coordinates: | House was designed for Mario and Margaret Schiess. Mario Schiess, Swiss born in 1933, and died in Pretoria in 1998. Mario graduated from Pretoria University in 1956 and followed a career in Quantity Surveying for 33 years as a partner in the firm Prentice, Shaw and Schiess in Pretoria. Parallel to his QS career, he followed his passion for theatre as a director and playwright and directed of 60 plays, operas, films and TV programmes. Mario was also well known in Psychological circles and in 1994 was made an Honorary member of the Association of Jungian Analysts. His forte was dream interpretation giving regular workshops and the occasional radio show. When the house was being built, the ground was so rocky that Helmut and builder Mr Gerbel found the solution in situating the parking garage downstairs, building a staircase to the living home and the BIG ROOM was born (what would’ve been the garage). This big room was used for rehearsals for decades! Mario and Margaret Schiess brought up 5 children in this home, and many grandchildren followed. The ingenious design of the house has allowed the hosting of parties, weddings and funerals, sometimes 300 people flowing through the spaces when the big room with it’s long purpose-built wooden sliding door was opened up.
