Transcript of Knysna Historical Society Plaque:

Belvidere House
George Rex bought the farm Uitzigt out of the estate of Hendrik
Barnard in 1830 and named it Belvidere, which he sold in 1834 to
his son-in-law Thomas Henry Duthie for £750. Duthie with his
wife Caroline and daughter settled at Belvidere and built a small
cottage near here, but this soon became too small for the growing
family. The foundations for a larger house were laid in 1848,
which was completed a year later. Initially a single storey structure
with a roof of thatch, the walls were raised in the 1870's by their
son Archibald Hamilton Duthie and the roof was replaced
with corrugated iron. The Belvidere Postal Agency operated
here from 1844 to 1866 and was known as "Duthies".
The house was declared a National Monument in 1995.
