This was replaced by the Second Transvaal Hotel. Caption of black and white photograph: WHERE PRETORIA WELCOMED ITS GUESTS During the Transvaal War Pretoria, garrisoned by 3,700 British, was besieged by the Boer forces, capitulating after the Majuba disaster. Government officials became grass-cutters and issuers of rations, and the Chief Justice a sanitary inspector. This view of the Transvaal Hotel dates from the War days.
