The large St John Vianney Seminary complex was built to the design of Voorvelt in the heart of Afrikanerdom, Pretoria between 1950 and 1952. Situated on a slope, the visual prominence of this stolid Catholic 'bulwark' is further emphasized by the crucifix-topped tower that rises over the central entrance. The ensemble, laid out around two courtyards, contains an exceptionally fine chapel, which exhibits the same serenity as Voorvelt's 1937 Maria Church in Haarlem, the Netherlands.
