This is the only octagonal Rice Pattern Blockhouse extant at its original location, built to protect the barracks located there once the British forces had occupied Pretoria in 1900. The building is recorded by Green (2022:124) as being occupied and in the process of decay and imminent collapse, with loopholes removed and sealed for weather-proofing.
