| This church replaced the second Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk, which had to be demolished after extensive damage in an earthquake in 1911. It was built on the same site where the second had stood. The foundation stone was laid on 1 February 1913, and the church was inaugurated on 10 January 1914. The building, including the organ, cost £3 600. The building’s instability became apparent in 1948, with the walls having to be anchored with cables. The cause was thought to be the geological composition of the soil. In 1965 the congregation saw sand sifting down when the organ was played, and one of the gables was found to be leaning forward about 1,5m. An investigation showed that the building had become unsafe, and the decision was taken to demolish it. The last service was held on 25 September 1966. The NG Kerk Monument with the corner stone and three plaques from this church was erected on the site. The church was replaced by the Fourth Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk, built elsewhere in the town. Submitted by Lila Komnick. See Wikipedia. References:
