In 1904, Thomas Wade, a Boer War veteran, built the first wooden pavilion on the beach. The first timber pavilion, including changing cubicles and showers, was built in 1914, but was destroyed by fire in 1923. In 1921 the tea room was moved to Onrus by truck and is now a residence named Binderman's Cottage / Glenugie. A new brick pavilion was built in 1929, which included a playground and cinema. Walker (2015: 33) writes that Cherry was awarded the project in 1927, based on the success of his Sea Point Bathing Pavilion of 1913. This second Strand pavilion was demolished in 1972. The current (third) pavilion was built in 1990.
