| According to Dr Helen Robinson in her Beyond the City Limits : People and Property at Wynberg 1795-1927, William Cogill bought the property in 1869. The hotel built there was originally designed by AM DE WITTT. The hotel was in existence by 1878 as it is mentioned in John Noble's The Cape and South Africa (1878:115). Walker (2015: 67) mentions an advertisement for the hotel placed in 1886. Dennis Edwards & Co included Cogill's in their Cape Town Guide (1897:109) as one of the leading hotels in Cape Town at the time. It was apparently rebuilt in 1938 to a design by WH GRANT. According to the City of Cape Town Official Guide (1950), the hotel had 30 rooms, 15 bathrooms, and 3 suites with bathrooms. The hotel was demolished c1970, to make way for Grand Bazaar (now Shoprite). The nearby Cogill Road perpetuates its name.
