Originally designed by AM DE WITT before 1908 it was apparently rebuilt in 1938 to a design by WH GRANT.

Walker (2015: 67) mentions an advertisement for this hotel placed in 1886. Dennis Edwards & Co included it in their Cape Town Guide of 1897 (p109) as one of the leading hotels in Cape Town at the time.
