(Yuill 1984:104) Savoy Hotel is one of Kimberley's oldest and most enchanting hotels. the hotel opened for the first time on 1 September 1897. It has lived through the diamond heydays, was re-built in 1901, and soon proved to be the best hotel in the city. In 1921 the Savoy Hotel was again upgraded. (SafariNow, accessed 2020 03 27) --------------- It was first opened on 1 September 1892 by Mrs Clacey at the time of the Kimberley International Exhibition, on the old Boshof Road. A double-storeyed brick building with upper and lower verandahs, the Savoy hotel boasted nearly 40 rooms. In 1901 it was owned by a Mrs Foster, resident in England, with the license holder being William Tiffin. The original building was destroyed by fire in 1901. A "new" Savoy Hotel would be built and opened in 1904, but on Old De Beers Road. In 1921 the hotel was upgraded, and in 2000 Mr & Mrs Papenfus bought the hotel from long-time owner Nathan Cohen and made further improvements.
