One of the finest examples of art deco in Muizenberg is the old Balmoral Hotel, built 1932, corner of Beach and Melrose Road, which was designed by Julius Lonstein for proprietor B. Phillips. In 1937 he designed extensions to the ground floor and two years later designed a further storey which was added to the hotel. (Walker 2010: 97).

The building is no longer a hotel, but a mix of flats on the first and second floors and retail shops on the ground floor.
