"The club, which is reputed to have had a dining room that could seat 750, was too lavish and expensive and was soon sold to Mother Ambrose of the Order of the Holy Family who turned it into the End Street Convent. This was the precursor to the Parktown Convent which was completed in 1905. The site today, across from End Park, is a high-rise building that was once headquarters for Nedbank... In 1887, End Street once marked the literal end of the original town, where beyond lay the farm Doornfontein, soon to be one of Johannesburg’s first suburbs for wealthy Randlords. After the 2nd Boer War in 1902, many of the Randlords sold up and moved to the more secluded Parktown over the ridge... The street numbers were later re-allocated." (Source: Johannesburg 1912.)
