See also the Memorial to the Newcastle Mounted Rifles. During the occupation by the Boers (October-May 1900), looted furniture was stacked in the Town Hall and dynamite stored under the floor in one of the dressing rooms. For some unknown reason the Boers decided not to blow up the Hall before they departed.
