Award Citation This timber structure is hidden on a sea-facing slope, far from any amenities. The needs of the owners had to be catered for within a 150m² footprint, in a structure featuring vertical elements and horizontal platforms. These are exquisitely combined on two levels. Through the manipulation of the roof and setback in the first floor, the entire space forms a singular sculpted entity, with only the main bedroom being separable. Within the central, unified space, a range of varying sub-spaces is provided, catering for different moods. A good sense of enclosure is provided, as well as framed links to the surrounding vistas which are enlivened by the movement of the sun through the central space. The structure is unobtrusive, with a language of columns and cross-bracing building, mimicked in the roof structure. The result is an elegant, well-proportioned building.
