(PSB:303) [Entry extracted from electronic document researched and created by Joanna Walker, now lodged in the archives of the Department of Architecture, University of Pretoria] The furniture manufacturing company Bell Bros was started by the Scottish brothers James Bell and Richard Bell in Cape Town in 1906. They were joined by Herbert Webb in 1908. The company's name was changed to Bell Webb & Bell and their trademark 'Belweb' was registered. They first rented factory space in central Cape Town, and then had their own factory called 'Oakfield Works' built in Observatory in 1919. The company closed down in 1936 after the death of Webb and the retirement of the Bell brothers. See Belweb Furniture.
