Eclectic ZA Wilhelmiens : A shared Dutch built heritage in South Africa

Chapter 05 page 90

Author:Clarke, Nicholas & Fisher, Roger
Title:Road bridges of the ZAR

Two of the editors, Clarke and Fisher undertook a number of lengthy and extensive field trips to discover what remains of the programme of the provisioning of infrastructure, especially that of bridges in the old ZAR by the DPW. Remarkably, all stone bridges survive, many now off the main routes but often still proximate, having been replaced by concrete structures of more recent date, most still serving their purpose as providing for rural traffic. This photo-essay presents their enduring and noble presence in the rugged South African landscape, testimony to the effort and achievement of their existence.
