Clarke explores the Dutch landscape tradition of the late C19 and examines what influences, in terms of the Influence of the English picturesque landscape tradition, and its emanation under Dutch influence. He shows how Wierda had personal engagement and recall of this and what influence this might have had in the provisioning of public spaces and even the planning of urban centres for a predominantly rural and agrarian population in the ZAR.
