Was born in Illinois in the United States of America. His father was Richard Read from London. He was educated in America, England and South Africa, coming to Natal as a child in about 1876. He directed early training to practical building, and subsequently went through the NATAL GOVERNMENT RAILWAYS Technical Institute, finally entering the architectural profession in 1899, in which he was eventually joined by (Natal Who's Who 1906:162), GH HURST with whom he entered into partnership in 1902/3 (cf READ & HURST). Read was a foundation member of the Natal Institute of Architects in 1901 and a council member from 1910 until 1913; he was elected vice-president in 1915. He married Margaret Ann Gibbins, aged 20, in Durban in Feb 1903. Some discrepancy: his age on his marriage certificate is 36, but he would have been 38. The births of their six children, four boys and two girls, were registered between 1903 and 1915. Thomas and Margaret Ann were buried in the Stellawood cemetery in Durban.
