Currently Taylor's birth place is not known. It appears that he began his architectural training aged seventeen as an assistant in Herbert BAKER's office in Johannesburg in 1910. The firm became BAKER & FLEMING before he left the office. He attended the architectural lectures at the School of Mines and Technology in Johannesburg until 1914 when he enlisted for active service and fought in France and Belgium, returning to South Africa in 1918/1919. He joined STREET-WILSON & PATON's office in Durban and was elected a member of the Natal Institute of Architects in December 1919. In September 1934 he entered into partnership (cf PATON & TAYLOR). On Wallace PATON's death in 1948 the firm became known as PATON, TAYLOR, WILLIES & BENNET. In 1949 his contracts included United Tobacco Co., Lever Bros SA, Motor Assemblies Ltd, Escom House and Union Club building (FRIBA nom papers 1949). Taylor retired in 1964 and was made a life member of the Institute of South African Architects in 1965. He died in Durban.
