Studied architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand, graduating in 1937. His final-year thesis was a photographic study of contemporary domestic architecture in Johannesburg, the photography being of a particularly high quality. Abbott was keenly interested in flying and was training as a pilot while still a student. After graduating he entered the office of COWIN & ELLIS. In 1940 he married Marjory LEITCH, an architect - her father was Arthur LEITCH. Abbott joined the South African Air Force in 1940 as a lieutenant on active service and was killed in an air crash at Debra Tabor, Abyssinia. Described as 'brilliant and temperamental' by Angus Stewart (SAAR Apr 1942:102), his brief career as an architect is represented by a house for his father designed in association with Douglas COWIN c1938 (cf. COWIN & ABBOTT) from which it is evident that his sympathies were with the modernist movement. He lived latterly at Epping Lodge, Morningside, Johannesburg.
