Was born in Norwich, Norfolk, England; he came to South Africa with his brother Lionel DEVEREUX in 1850. They seem to have trained as builders but were called upon to design and erect buildings. By 1854 he was living and working in newly-founded Pretoria where he, his brother and W SKINNER were responsible for the Dutch Reformed Church building (1854-5) on Church Square in Pretoria (1854-5) (cf DEVEREUX & SKINNER). Devereux never married and lived his whole life with the Skinner family. William Skinner died suddenly in 1885 and three weeks later Devereux died of the same sickness (lung infection). He was buried in the same grave as his life long friend William Skinner. Family tradition has it that he died of a broken heart. Devereux was a very good carpenter and made a riempiesbankie (thong bench) of indigenous wood for each of the Skinner children. See also DEVEREUX (brothers).
