BArch (Rand), ISAA, TPIA.
Graduate of the Wits School of Architecture in 1958. In the 1950s before graduating he, with his peer, Arnold GLASSMAN, had worked in STAUCH's office in Pretoria 'absorbing Stauch methodology and economy in the use of draughting paper' (Chipkin 1993:283). Chipkin (1993:287) states that he is amongst those Johannesburg architects for whom Norman EATON of Pretoria, while having no major work in Johannesburg, was 'nevertheless an important reference point ...'. After graduating he worked first for Basil Spence in London, thereafter for Richard NEUTRA in California, lessons that remained with him when he opened his own Johannesburg office in 1962 (Chipkin 1993:302).
'Clinton's houses are wide-eaved and have strong horizontal fascia lines ... . Frequently the walls are built of Roodepoort face-brick chosen for its texture and natural colour variations from plums to reds. Eaton-like grille perforations afford privacy, security and sun-protection. There is ''little or no deference to style but a strong empathy for natural materials...''' (Chipkin 1992:303). With Eaton he shares an ethos based on'the use of economical materials usually left as found, a topographical and climatic sensibility, and respect for indigenous art forms which enhance interior space' (Chipkin 1993:303).
In 1969 he was of the address 155 Everite House, De Korte Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg. All truncated references not fully cited in 'References' are those of Joanna Walker's original text and cited in full in the 'Bibliography' entry of the Lexicon. Books citing CLINTON |
