ARMSTRONG was born in London, England on 17 April 1885, the eldest son of Robert Mangan Armstrong and his wife Isabel Eugenie nee Chemery.
He was employed as a draughtsman in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT, Pretoria from November 1902. He was a registered probationer of the Royal Institute of British Architects in Pretoria in 1905.
He went from South Africa to Australia, served in the 7 Light Horse in Gallipoli, transferred to the Australian Artillery and served in France and Flanders. He survived WW1 and returned to Australia in December 1918, where he worked as an architect in Sydney. He died 1 October 1940 when he fell off a ferry in Sydney harbour and drowned.
