FREEMAN, PJ

Born: fl. 1918

Architect

'South Africa's first woman architect' (SAB Jan 1923:25), Miss Freeman trained at the Architectural Association in London, completing the three year course in 1922. She was amongst the very first female students allowed to enter the school in 1918. It is not known where she was born but by 1923 she was working in the office of KENDALL & MORRIS in Cape Town. She was contemporary with Nelly EDWARDS, also reputed to be the first woman architect in Johannesburg. As she does not appear to have been a member of the Institute of South African Architects she may have left South Africa or changed her name before 1927.
