BArch 1986 (Cape Town) Mark Thomas is a Cape Town based Architect practicing in a collaborative environment on selected projects. After qualifying at UCT he worked for GAPP and VISSER THOMAS ARCHITECTS before starting his own practice MARK THOMAS ARCHITECTS. As a student he lived in a traditional whitewashed barn in Rondebosch. There were two bedrooms downstairs, garage doors that opened wide from a central living area, a long low loft upstairs and an outside bathroom. The form and simplicity of this hundred year building had a profound effect on him. He strives for this simplicity in his architectural work. Together with Engineer Henry FAGAN he designed the Kirstenbosch Centenary Tree Canopy walkway. He has chosen to work on projects where design, material and detail are the driving forces. He shares a love for timber and how natural materials are put together. He has, and continues to work on a broad range of projects. He has been inspired by the sculptural brilliance of Luis BARRAGĂN and his ability to frame nature; the fluidity and human-scale of Alvar AALTO's work, and at a local level, the joy in Bert PEPLER's work and detail; the brilliance of Jack BARNETT's Baxter Theatre; the skills of Macio and Anya of VAN DER MERWE MISZEWSKI ARCHITECTS in pulling together their projects and the smooth and experienced design ability of Geoff GEORGE.
