Geurt Marinus Jacobus Geers was born in Pretoria, the son of the architect LM GEERS. From 1926 to 1932 he studied architecture part-time in Pretoria. In 1928 he joined the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT as a draughtsman. He joined GLP MOERDYK's office for about a year (1932-1933) before leaving to complete his studies. He graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a Diploma in Architecture (in absentia) on 3 August 1934. In 1934 he entered into partnership with his father (cf GEERS & GEERS), the office being based in Johannesburg, and applied for Associate membership of the RIBA. In 1944 they opened another office in Pretoria. According to a colleague in the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT, Geers was a gifted and able architect. He drowned while swimming at Glenmore, South Coast, Natal, where he had gone during an inspection of the new Vaderland Voortrekker Strandfonds, a seaside holiday resort.
