It is not certain where AE Gerhardt trained. He sat the special qualifying examination in Cape Town in 1936; his doctorate, obtained before his arrival in South Africa was in engineering. He was in partnership with AC JOHNSTON (cf GERHARDT & JOHNSTON) in Cape Town and in Somerset West in 1936. The partnership was dissolved in January 1938. A patent was taken out in his name (dated 1939) for 'Improvements in or relating to the manufacture of component parts of aircraft, vehicles and the like' (Cleland docs, HSRC); an accompanying letter is entitled: 'F. Gerhardt, MAIV, Dipl Eng, MIA, Architect'. Gerhardt moved to the Transvaal, transferring his Institute membership in 1941 to that of the Transvaal Provincial Institute of Architects.
