Menu Home Upfront Now Up Books Towns Structures People Firms Lexicon GOTZSCHE, Sigfred Born: 1872 11 22 Died: 1949 03 30 Architect Year registered: 1927 Born in Denmark where he trained in building construction, Gotzsche was Clerk of works for the building of Castle Mardisberg in Aaxhus from 1899 until 1902. He married Maria Augusta Holmquist in Elsaf, Sweden in 1900 and emigrated to South Africa in 1902 to join De Beers Gold Mining Co Ltd as an architect in Johannesburg. He set up practice on his own account (n.d.) in Johannesburg, working from offices in the Corner House in Commissioner Street. It seems that he was in association in or around 1905 with G NYBERG (cf GOTZSCHE & NYBERG). According to I Welz, Jean WELZ worked in Gotzsche's office for a short time in about 1938. In 1912 Gotzsche visited Denmark and he received the Knighthood Danneborg for his helpfulness to Danes in South Africa (Welz's wife was Danish). No records have yet been found of work executed by him, apart from extensions to the (then black) Hospital, Barberton, (1949), fees for which were due to him when he died. ISAA 1927.
