Born in Paarl, the only child of Carel Pieter Immelman and Johanna Francina Immelman (nee Retief). Christened in Vanrhynsdorp on 4 March 1900. He received his primary education at La Rochelle and matriculated from Paarl Gymnasium before going to study further at Cape Town. He qualified in 1924 and was listed as a probationer of the RIBA in Cape Town that year. He set up practice on his own account in Cape Town at 4 Church Square. By 1928 he was living in East London and by 1933 had returned to Paarl. He married Jean Wardlaw Muir on 4 January 1930 in Hazeldene, Vryheid, Natal. Their marriage register gives his address as Durban and hers as Glenmore, Vryheid. They had a daughter Gillian who died aged three, and a son Peter Wardlaw Immelman. His address on his death certificate was 5 Aandblom Rd, Pinelands. According to Albertyn (1992), Immelman often employed the Art Deco style and motifs in his buildings. ISAA 1928.
