| The church was inaugurated in December 1895 and was badly damaged in a dynamite explosion on 19 February 1896, a few months after completion. The explosion was caused by a train in nearby Braamfontein which was loaded with dynamite for the mines. See Wikipedia for photos of the damage done to the church. The church was in use until 1940.
