JOHANNESBURG ARCHITECTURAL LEGACY
KILLARNEY HILLS
Killarney Hills, designed by Monty Sack, is an
outstanding example of late 1950s Brazilian modernism.
Commissioned by John Schlesinger, who inherited his father
Isidore Schlesinger’s business empire, the building included
penthouses designed for John and his brother Julian. The
works of several prominent artists enhance the design:
decorative off-shutter concrete panels by Edoardo Villa, a
mosaic by Armando Baldinelli, light boxes and door
handles by Giuseppe Cattaneo, a painting on glass
by Larry Scully, painted and graffito murals
by Monty Sack himself.
