| A rambling 'extraordinary confection'. The first owner of Friedaura was Heymann Saenger (1859–1933). He was described in a South African Whose Who entry in 1909 as a financier. He was an immigrant from Germany and was educated in Germany and South Africa. In 1889 he married Annie Jacobsohn and they had seven children. It was a rambling house that well suited a large Edwardian family. Friedaura was a home that lasted for no more than two generations.In the decade of the 1960s it had ceased to be a family home fit for purpose and served as the boarding house for Helpmekaar Girls School. Just prior to demolition it was rented as a student commune (Heritage Portal). The impressive gates in ornamental Art Nouveau style wrought iron are remnants of the property located in the grounds of Helpmekaar Girls High or later called the Rand Girls High School, now the Helpmekaar College. |
