The building was declared a National Monument in 1984 and is now a Provincial Heritage Site. Description from Government Gazette 9338 of 27 July 1984: “The building in Piet Retief Street, with its Cape Dutch and Georgian characteristics, was designed by the architect John Parker and was erected in 1910 as primary school for the town. It was bought and restored in 1976 by the Municipality of Montagu.” The building now houses the Montagu Public Library and municipal offices.
