DRAIBY, Frederick Marius Rasmussen

Born: 1877 04 28
Died: 1966 04 16

Architect

Was born in Kirkehelsige, Denmark. He trained as a bricklayer with his father, C Rasmussen, a building contractor. In 1890 he studied at the Technical Institute in Copenhagen and shortly afterwards entered the Royal Academy for Architects, Copenhagen. He was employed by several architects in Copenhagen during the time he trained, including Professor Dahlemys, the Royal Architect, to whom he was an assistant and became an Associate of the Royal Danish Academy in 1897.

In 1901 he came to Cape Town and entered the office of HT JONES as principal architect being admitted into partnership in 1903 (cf. JONES & DRAIBY). In 1904/5 the partners opened a branch office in Johannesburg which Draiby ran, Jones remaining in Cape Town. (Draiby married in 1904).

The partners' work remains unknown between 1905 and 1923 in both Cape Town and Johannesburg but works in Cape Town have been found dating from 1923. Jones & Draiby are not listed after 1928 in Cape Town and at present Draiby's career in Johannesburg after 1905 remains obscure. No death certificate has yet been found for Draiby in Transvaal records. Only the continuing of the firm's name suggests that Draiby might have remained in South Africa after 1908.
