Hirst was articled to ING & JACKSON in whose office he was between 1921 and 1926, also attending evening classes at the Technical College in Durban. He won the Emma Smith Scholarship in 1926 which enabled him to study at the Architectural Association in London between 1927 and 1929. While at the AA he was commissioned to design for the Howard Memorial College. Hirst's ARIBA papers were signed in London in 1930 and in 1934 he entered into partnership with WG MOFFAT in Durban (cf MOFFAT & HIRST), the partnership continued until 1944.

By 1959 he is recorded as being of address 1053 Mansion House, Field Street Durban. By 1969 he is in a partnership styled W HIRST and STANLEY SIMPSON of the same address.
