Also sometimes spelt HITCHING. The South African Who's Who (1908) gives HITCHING ; FK KENDALL referred to 'little Hitchin' (AB&E Jun 1931:11). Hitchin was born in Nottingham, England, he was the son of Henry Hitchin a lace manufacturer, and was educated in Nottingham and at University College, London (n.d.). He came to the Cape Colony in 1891 where for a few months he worked in the Engineering Department of the Cape Government Railways before joining Sydney STENT as managing assistant and then as partner for the branch office in Grahamstown. Stent died in 1898 (cf STENT & HITCHIN). Around 1905 Hitchin was briefly in partnership with HH BRIDGMAN in Oudtshoorn (cf BRIDGMAN & HITCHIN). He returned to Cape Town around 1905/1906 where he set up independent practice, designing buildings all over the country and acting as quantity surveyor on several government buildings. Hitchin was a member of the South African delegation to the 7th International Congress of Architects in London in 1906.
