BA(Arch)(UCT), MIA, ARIBA (1935), AMTPI, ISAA (1938), MSAITP. Born in Claremont, Cape Town, the son of Prof Thomas Parkes Kent and Constance Lydia Kent (nee Beard). Educated at the Diocesan College, Rondebosch. He studied architecture at the University of Cape Town, graduating in 1934. He also did studies at Regent Polytechnic London. He worked in the office of WALGATE & ELSWORTH from early 1931 until January 1932. This experience was followed by nine months (August 1932 to April 1933) with WH GRANT. In 1935 he was elected an Associate member of the RIBA. In April 1937 he travelled to New York on the Queen Mary. Kent appears to have set up practice on his own account in Cape Town about 1938. He was later in partnership with HE Twentyman JONES [LIGHTFOOT, TWENTYMAN-JONES and KENT (in 1959 of Markham's Building, 60 Adderley Street, Cape Town, in 1969 'and PARTNERS' of Regis House, Adderley Street Cape Town)]. During WW2 he served with the ROYAL ENGINEERS with the rank of Major. On 1941 05 31 he married Janet Patricia Osborne (1916-2003); they had two sons. He served as President of the Cape Institute of Architects in the years 1956 to 1958. Recipient of the Medal of Distinction from the South African Institute of Architects in 1982.
