DipArch 1934 (Witwatersrand)
Lodge was born in Reditch, Lancashire in England, son of John Oswald Lodge, but spent his childhood in Uitenhage. The family move to Pretoria led to his education at Pretoria Boys' High School. He was articled to V REES-POOLE and completed his architectural training in classes held at the University of Pretoria. He duly graduated in August 1934 with a Diploma in Architecture from the University of the Witwatersrand, winning the gold medal for design in his final year. After graduation he continued as an assistant to Rees-Poole but left after a while to work as an architectural assistant at Pretoria municipality. He joined JS BURG's office in Springs in 1935, and in 1936 Lodge was asked to assist Burg in his Pretoria office. A few years later the partnership of BURG, LODGE & BURG was formed in Pretoria. In 1938 he married Pamela Elizabeth Eales, daughter of Stanley York Eales.
During the Second World War Lodge became assistant architect at ISCOR, still a member of the partnership. In the postwar period he took charge of design at the Pretoria Municipality, and in 1945 he became the chairman of the local directorate of the United Building Society in Pretoria and was a member of the committee which chose works of art for buildings erected by the PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT.
