Lonstein studied at the School of Architecture at the University of the Witwatersrand, winning the student's prize essay award in 1919 with a paper entitled 'Open timber roofs.' On graduation he worked in the office of AJ MARSHALL in Johannesburg for a short time before moving to Port Elizabeth. By 1925 he was probably working in JONES & McWILLIAMS's office, since Lonstein's papers for Licentiate membership of the RIBA were witnessed by VT JONES; Lonstein witnessed WJ McWILLIAM's Fellowship papers for RIBA membership in the same year. In 1928 Lonstein set up on his own account in Cape Town. Among the earliest buildings he designed in Cape Town was the synagogue in Sea Point (1931-c1933). Lonstein was responsible for a number of apartment blocks in Cape Town.
