An ambitious structure, 'whose hideous cast-iron spire [was] still prominent [in 1971]. Its interior [was] debased ''medieval'' with thin arched and braced roof-trusses, ''stained'' glass windows which epitomise commercial gothic at its worst' (Greig, 1971: 131)
