Originally part of the farm Klaasenbosch, it was bought by Arnold Spilhaus in 1906. He had the original thatched farmhouse replaced by the impressive homestead designed by Seeliger. Hohenort means "high place". A year after Spilhaus's death in 1946, the farm was split into sections and sold off. The house had become an hotel by 1950. It was listed in the 'City of Cape Town Official Guide' (1950) as 'Hohenort Country House', with 34 rooms, 13 bathrooms, and seven suites with private bathrooms.
