Lexicon Free State Institute of Architects _____________________________________________________ Previously the Orange Free State Institute of Architects. It was founded on 10 October 1921 and is an affiliation of the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA). As the result of continuous personal endeavour by Bloemfontein architects, a voluntary association, known as the OFS Institute of Architects, was brought into being in October, 1921. It was represented at the subsequent conferences which led to the unification of the architectural profession throughout South Africa, culminating in the passing of Act No. 18 of 1927. When when the statutory register was commenced in 1928, its inaugural membership was 9, by 1969 it had grown to 72. Membership was statutory, regulated by the Act. With the changes that came about with the new dispensation of 1994, and subsequent change to voluntary membership in 1996, it became the Free State Institute of Architects, affiliated to the South African Institute of Architects (SAIA).
